Exploring New Urbanism’s Eclectic Architecture

Eclectic architecture is the embodiment of New Urbanism’s principle of diversity. In a New Urbanist neighborhood, you’ll often find a range of architectural styles that attempt to blend harmoniously. This approach is meant to promote an inclusive and welcoming environment that caters to various tastes and preferences. Rather than imposing a single, uniform architectural style, New Urbanism allows for creative freedom and expression, celebrating the diversity of human design.

Rooted in Tradition:

Eclectic architecture often draws inspiration from historical and traditional design elements. It reflects an appreciation for the architectural heritage of a region, helping communities maintain a connection to their history. By incorporating these traditional elements, New Urbanism seeks to create places that feel timeless, as though they have always been a part of the urban fabric.

Human-Scale Design:

Eclectic architecture in New Urbanism also aims at human-scale design. While eclectic architecture in New Urbanism has numerous merits, it’s not without its challenges. Critics argue that it can sometimes lead to a lack of architectural cohesion, resulting in neighborhoods that may appear disjointed. Balancing the preservation of tradition with the need for innovation and sustainability can also be a complex task. In addition, one could argue that to embrace only a few aspects of a tradition and reject others isn’t to actually embrace a tradition at all, but create something new.

Indeed, my own personal critique of the eclectic architecture of New Urbanism is it’s façade-like nature. It embodies a postmodern pick-and-choose mindset that purports to provide architectural freedom, but ends up generating communities that end up as a kind of Frankenstein community–a piece of Germany here, the Netherlands there, this era here, this era there. It’s the same critique that could be leveled at Disney Land or Disney World: it focuses on pedestrianism but its buildings are facades and falsehoods. Those visiting Disney parks embrace the falsehood for the sake of entertainment, and similarly, some people want to live in that kind of escapism. Who is to say whether that is right or wrong? But the critique is that a community of escapists isn’t necessarily the best aim for a society, and perhaps not the best aim for an architectural philosophy. Even then, the majority of North American planned communities do worse.

In conclusion, New Urbanism’s embrace of eclectic architecture offers an interesting approach to urban planning and design. It celebrates diversity, tradition, and human-scale design while aiming to promote a unique sense of community identity. While it comes with its share of challenges, the philosophy of New Urbanism continues to inspire the development of neighborhoods that are not just visually appealing but also inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable. Eclectic architecture, when thoughtfully integrated, can contribute to the creation of truly livable and engaging urban spaces.
